The European Journal of Spatial Development (EJSD) is an open-access journal that publishes high-quality research on spatial planning, regional development, policymaking, and governance, with a particular focus on European and EU-related perspectives.

EJSD provides a critical platform for exploring how spatial development is coordinated, governed, and institutionalized across various scales and territories. Rooted in the Social Sciences, the journal primarily focuses on Spatial Planning and Development, Urban Studies, and Geography, while welcoming interdisciplinary contributions that broaden the understanding of European spatial development.

The journal covers the following core themes:

· Equitable distribution of resources, opportunities, and outcomes across regions, including spatial justice, territorial cohesion, and place-based just transitions.

· Governance changes, planning systems, and policy frameworks at the EU level, as well as cross-border, national, regional, and local scales.

· Urbanization patterns and regional dynamics, including metropolitan processes, secondary cities, small and medium-sized towns, and specific foci such as post-socialist city transformations.

· Localization of place-based policies, addressing institutional dynamics and a broad range of topics, such as community building, sustainable mobilities and lifestyles, digital and physical infrastructures, migrant inclusion, and their impact on urban and regional development.

While these themes represent the journal's main focus, EJSD encourages contributions that advance the broader field of European spatial development.

To support early-career scholars, EJSD provides editorial guidance and opportunities for publishing rigorous, peer-reviewed research. The journal also promotes the publication of special issues on thematic topics and welcomes collections of articles from events such as summer schools, conferences, or postgraduate programs in European spatial planning and development.

In alignment with the principles of the Berlin Declaration on Open Access, EJSD ensures unrestricted access to its content, facilitating the free exchange of knowledge. By signing the Declaration on February 29, 2024, the journal reaffirmed its commitment to making scientific advancements accessible to academics, practitioners, and policymakers.

EJSD is fully open-access, with no fees for authors or readers.
